Sponsorship Transition

From their founding in 1843 in Quebec, Canada, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary have educated scores of young people, enhancing their knowledge, developing their individual gifts, deepening their sense of faith and life purpose, and enabling them to become leaders in the creation of a more just society. Across the United States, beginning in 1859, Sisters of the Holy Names (SNJM) have founded, sponsored and led educational institutions, each an expression of the SNJM Mission.

In 2016, recognizing the demographic challenges experienced by religious congregations throughout the United States, the Sisters began a process of research and consultation regarding future sponsorship of these beloved institutions. Then, in July of 2018, the Sisters of the U.S.-Ontario Province, gathered together at their Province Chapter, approved a recommendation to submit a petition to the Vatican. They requested approval of a new Ministerial Public Juridic Person (MPJP) which would serve as the sponsor in the future. This MPJP would be called Holy Names Educational Ministries.

In 2022, their petition to form an MPJP (ministerial public juridic person) was approved. This allows for the continuation of SNJM ministries to be officially recognized as Catholic institutions and for talented lay men and women to join the Sisters in increasing numbers, collaborating in the sponsorship responsibilities previously reserved to the Sisters only. The Sisters have unanimously and enthusiastically expressed their confidence that this innovative approach will continue the SNJM Spirit and Core Values well into the future.
